All-star NBA player and Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo paid a visit to Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer this week to collaborate with personnel on the hospital’s global humanitarian efforts.

Mutombo, who played 18 seasons for the NBA, is known for using his basketball fame as a platform for his humanitarian efforts. He spearheaded and helped fund the creation of the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in 2007 – the first modern medical facility to be built in decades on the outskirts of his hometown, the Congolese capital of Kinshasa. A quarter of the city’s 7.5 million residents live in poverty.

Mutombo spent the morning meeting with Sheba’s leadership to discuss a partnership that will fulfill his humanitarian goals. He then toured The Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital and The Edmond J. Safra International Congenital Heart Center, where he visited sick children and gave away signed basketballs.

"I have been greatly inspired by my visit to Sheba Medical Center, which represents the best of Israeli technological experience and hope to deepen this cooperation with my hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo," said Mutombo.

Happy Hannukah!! This #feauturefriday is @sheba_2.0 committee member @desi_l 👩🏻‍⚕️🕎💙
How did you get involved with Sheba 2.0 ?
I’m finishing my training in Pediatric Neurology this year and my fellowship entails working with children, adults and veterans. I came across Sheba, and quickly realized their mission and goals are quite similar to mine. Sheba is one of the most unique hospital systems out there. They breakdown borders and provide medical access to everyone across the Middle East. Sheba also collaborates with many hospitals around the world and shares its medical research, advancements and technology.

What are you looking forward to most in working with Sheba 2.0
I'm looking forward to learning about medical advancements that I can bring back to our community to enrich their lives and improve their health.

What do you love about Israel?
I love the diversity of Israel. People with different backgrounds, from all over the world, have come together to create a beautiful culture.
