Last Friday, December 1st Friends of Sheba Medical Center held an intimate salon for over 20 next generation philanthropist women at a beautiful home in Beverly Hills. Our keynote speaker was Prof. Raz Somech, an international leader in Pediatric Immunology and Director of the Department of Pediatrics at Sheba Medical Center’s Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital. Prof. Somech spoke about his department’s current research, treatments and highlighted Sheba Medical Center’s National Newborn Screening Program.
Professor Raz Somech serves as Director of the Department of Pediatrics at Sheba Medical Center’s Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital and Director of the Pediatric Immunology Unit at the Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic Center for Primary Immunodeficiency.
In addition, Prof. Somech is Director of the Israel Society for Primary Immunodeficiency, Director of the National Lab for Newborn Screening for SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) and Senior Scientist at the Cancer Research Institute of Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer.
Prof. Somech is an Associate Professor at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv. Many of his studies have appeared in highly-esteemed scientific and medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and many more. Over the years, Prof. Somech has established close collaborations with the Palestinian authorities and doctors.
Sheba’s Pediatric Immunology Clinic and laboratory are dedicated to the diagnostic evaluation, treatment, monitoring and research of patients with disorders of the immune system, including congenital immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases.
Sheba leads Israel in the field of newborn screening for severe immunodeficiency and recently became the National Laboratory for validating results obtained from this program.
Prof. Somech’s department received the international acknowledgement of the prestigious Jeffrey Modell Foundation (JMF) for Clinical and Research Excellence in Primary Immunodeficiencies – the “gold standard” benchmark for excellence in his field.
